Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) is an advanced radiation technique that precisely shapes radiation beams to match the three-dimensional structure of a tumor. By modulating the intensity of individual radiation beams, IMRT delivers higher doses directly to cancer cells while significantly reducing exposure to nearby healthy tissues and vital organs.
This technique is particularly useful for tumors located close to critical structures, where accuracy is essential to minimize side effects. IMRT improves dose distribution and enhances treatment outcomes, making it one of the most widely used modern radiation therapy modalities.
The process begins with detailed imaging such as CT simulation and, when required, MRI or PET fusion to accurately define the tumor and adjacent critical structures. Advanced treatment planning software calculates optimal beam intensities and angles to achieve precise dose distribution.
During treatment, a linear accelerator delivers radiation from multiple angles while adjusting beam intensity in real time. Image guidance may also be used to confirm accurate positioning before each session, ensuring safe and effective radiation delivery.
IMRT represents a significant advancement in radiation oncology, combining precision technology with personalized treatment planning to provide effective cancer control while minimizing complications.
