VMAT

VMAT Treatment

Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) is an advanced form of intensity-modulated radiation therapy that delivers radiation continuously as the treatment machine rotates around the patient. This dynamic technique allows precise shaping and modulation of radiation beams to match the exact size, shape, and location of the tumor.

VMAT enables highly conformal dose distribution, meaning higher doses can be delivered to cancer cells while significantly reducing exposure to nearby healthy tissues and critical organs. The treatment is completed in a shorter duration compared to conventional radiation methods, improving patient comfort and efficiency.

Conditions Commonly Treated

  • Head & neck cancers
  • Prostate cancer
  • Breast cancer
  • Brain tumors
  • Gynecological cancers
  • Gastrointestinal cancers

Key Advantages

  • Highly precise and conformal radiation delivery
  • Shorter treatment time per session
  • Improved protection of surrounding healthy organs
  • Reduced risk of side effects
  • Efficient treatment for complex tumor shapes
  • Enhanced patient comfort during therapy

Treatment Planning & Procedure

The process begins with detailed imaging such as CT simulation and MRI fusion to accurately map the tumor and nearby organs. Advanced treatment planning software calculates optimal beam angles, dose intensity, and arc movements to ensure precise targeting.

During treatment, the linear accelerator rotates around the patient while continuously adjusting beam intensity and shape. Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) is often used to confirm accurate positioning before each session, ensuring safe and effective delivery.

VMAT represents a modern radiation modality that combines speed, precision, and safety, offering effective cancer treatment with improved outcomes and minimized complications.
